Keeping Children Safe

Child Protection and Safeguarding

The school shares a purpose with parents to keep children safe from harm and to have their welfare promoted.

At Thornton Dale Primary School, we recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children. We make every effort to provide a safe and welcoming environment underpinned by a culture of openness where both children and adults feel secure, able to talk and believe that they are being listened to.

'Schools and colleges and their staff are an important part of the wider safeguarding system for children. This system is described in statutory guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play. In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all practitioners should make sure their approach is child-centred. This means that they should consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child.
No single practitioner can have a full picture of a child’s needs and circumstances. If children and families are to receive the right help at the right time, everyone who comes into contact with them has a role to play in identifying concerns, sharing information and taking prompt action.

This applies to teaching staff, teaching assistants, non-teaching staff, premises staff, Governors, volunteers and anyone else who is responsible for, or is in contact with, children in our school.' (Keeping Children Safe in Education September 2019)

We are committed to working with parents positively, openly and honestly. We ensure that all parents are treated with respect, dignity and courtesy. We respect parents’ rights to privacy and confidentiality and will not share sensitive information unless we have permission or it is necessary to do so in order to protect a child. The pupils’ welfare is of paramount importance. Thornton Dale Primary School fully recognises the contribution it can make to protecting children and supporting pupils in schools.

School will share with parents any concerns we may have about their child unless to do so may place a child at risk of harm. We encourage parents to discuss any concerns they may have with either Mr Seeley or Mrs Beniams.

If you are concerned about the safety of your child, or a child you know, you should act without delay.

The child protection policy is available on the school website.

Operation Encompass

We are an Operation Encompass school. Operation Encompass is a partnership between the Police and designated school staff where, working together to safeguard children, the Police will inform the school about any incident where the child or young person has been present or exposed to domestic abuse. The information shared with the school allows the provision of immediate early intervention through overt or silent support, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.
