In Year 5, learning is thought-provoking, challenging and engaging. We work as a team to ensure that everyone can maximise their learning and achieve their best.
In writing, we use engaging texts and stimuli to write with increasingly advanced sentence structure, a growing range of vocabulary and a wider range of sophisticated punctuation. We follow a ‘3Cs approach’, where children collect ideas from quality texts and other stimuli, connect new ideas and learning to this and then create our own writing, providing opportunities for publishing work for an audience. We combine exceptionally high standards of presentation and punctuation with individuality and creativity to produce fantastic meaningful writing of amazing quality.
In maths, all children access self-led challenge, allowing for independence and opportunities for children to push themselves. Learning in maths begins every day with Early Bird, an opportunity to revise previously learned skills. We learn mathematical concepts over stages, beginning with conceptual understanding, developing procedural fluency and applying our learning through reasoning and problem solving challenges, showing determination and perseverance.
Reading plays an important part in Year 5 and all children read interesting and meaningful age-related texts every day in whole-class reading. We also promote reading for enjoyment by having regular ‘Drop Everything and Read’ sessions, where children can share favourite books and enjoy the freedom and adventures that reading provide.
In our learning of the wider curriculum, we use a Learning Mission approach, with and exciting launch-often a visitor to school or a class visit- and landing- which is an opportunity to show off all the fantastic learning we have done. Children continue to have opportunities to choose their own challenges based on team work, problem solving and other foundation subject skills, then work in focus groups with Mr Seeley or Miss Janicki and Mrs Evans.
